Rogers.   Rufus attended the Randolph County Public School System until he made a decision to leave school and follow his father into the field of road construction. Rufus was baptized at an early age and attended Zion Rock Church until he moved away from the area, and again on a regular basis after he moved back to Columbus, Georgia, until his health began to fail. He was employed by Wright Construction Company, Columbus, Georgia, for the majority of his career and rose to the level of foreman, where he was an expert in building Interstate Highways and airport runways. He was a specialist in the formulation of cement mixtures that were used in the construction of the Interstate Highways and airport runways, and he was also a heavy equipment operator and a very good automotive/truck mechanic. Rufus was initially married to the late Geraldine Alston, Chester, Pennsylvania, and then he later married Lorraine Jones Rogers. For approximately the last 21 years he shared his life with his faithful companion, Elizabeth “Liz” Nelson, who cared for him diligently from the time that his health began to fail until he passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Elizabeth is a very special and loving person who is deserving of much thanks and praise. Rufus leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memories, his devoted companion, Elizabeth “Liz” Nelson, Columbus, Georgia, and Lorraine Jones Rogers, Albany, Georgia; six children: Cherese Davis, Washington, DC; Jackie Sutton, Washington, DC; Benny Martin, West Palm Beach, Florida; Rufus Alston, Chester, Pennsylvania; and Donte’ Rogers and Delante’ Rogers, Albany, Georgia. His daughter, Michele Davis, preceded him in death. He also leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memories, six siblings: Joe Wallace “JW” Rogers, Cuthbert, Georgia; Minnie Rogers Campbell (William), Hyattsville, Maryland; Joseph “Joe” Rogers, Cuthbert, Georgia; Betty Rogers Sturgan, Cocoa, Florida; Wallace Rogers Jr., Cuthbert, Georgia; and R. Norris Rogers (Karen), Houston, Texas, and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Rufus was preceded in death by four of his siblings, Everlyn Rogers Scott, Irene Rogers Wilborn, David Rogers, and Georgia Ann Rogers. Rufus had accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Personal Savior before he passed away; therefore, the following scripture is appropriate/required reading for those of us left behind: John 11:21-25.
