Mildred Sherrod

Mildred Walker Sherrod was born on August 22, 1941, to the parentage of the late Mr. Johnny Walker Sr. and Bessie Lee Chester Walker in Cusseta, GA. She was educated in Muscogee County School System and graduated from Spencer High School, Class of 1960.

At an early age, Mildred confessed Christ and joined Bethel A.M.E. Church in Cusseta, GA. She later joined St. Mark A.M.E. Church in Columbus, GA while living in B.T.W. Apartments. Mildred later became a member of Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, Columbus, GA.

Mildred met and married the late Fred Douglas Sherrod, Jr., and to that union were born four sons, Darrell Walker Sherrod, Frederick Douglas Sherrod, III, Michael Dewayne Sherrod, and Larry Joseph Sherrod. She was a devoted military wife and mother. They lived in various places, including Alaska, Texas, Florida, Germany, and Georgia. Mildred was a "Sports Mom" who regularly attended her sons' games. She loved baseball, football, and basketball. Mildred, recognized for her cooking skills while working at the concession stand, was hired at the Young Adult Recreation Center near her husband's military posting.

Mildred retired as a head cook from the Fort Benning School System and began a career as a caregiver for those who needed assisted living care. She was President of Stewardess Board, Treasurer of the Emerline Bryant Women Missionary Society, and the Usher Board. Mildred was a member of the Eastern Star and volunteered with the Wynnton Neighborhood Network/Food Bank.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Bessie Walker, and her husband, the late Frederick Douglas Sherrod, Jr. She leaves to cherish wondrous memories: Sons, Darrell (Kristi) Sherrod, Frederick (Michelle) Sherrod, Michael Sherrod, and Larry (Stephanie) Sherrod; Stepdaughters, Astra Wesley and Avis Johnson; Brother, Mr. Johnny Walker Jr., Sisters, Katie Bell Wilson, Tisha Mae Fuller, and Mamie Lou Carter. Mildred Sherrod had twenty grandchildren and thirty-eight great-grandchildren. She cherished her nieces and nephews, a Great Aunt, Coop Weaver, relatives, church family, and friends.
